Review of Diary of a Country Herbalist in the May-June 2018 Issue of HerbalGram

June 2018

Our newest title, Diary of a Country Herbalist, received a nice review in the newest (May-June 2018) issue of HerbalGram--the slick, full-color journal produced by the American Botanical Council. The review drew attention to the book's many useful features, noting that it "includes a list of references, an index of the plants and health conditions referenced in the text, and blank pages for readers to make their own notes" and especially highlighted author Alfs' "flair for education." Readers can subscribe to this wonderful journal at www.herbalgram.org.

Yet Another Review of...

Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants of the Midwest

December 15th, 2014 Update:

Herbalgram, the official journal of the American Botanical Council, has just published a lengthy and glowing review of Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants, by Matthew Alfs. "Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants of the Midwest is unique in its genre," the reviewer notes, explaining that "similar books usually focus on either edible or medicinal plants. Though there has been demand for books that do both, it seems few authors have dared to attempt it. Matthew Alfs, a nature teacher, forager, environmentalist, and practicing herbalist, seems well qualified to take on this large project." The reviewer summarizes her thoughts by observing: "This book accomplishes its purpose and more. It is not just a reference to sit on the shelf; it belongs on the table for frequent use and consultation where other references are lacking....More than a foraging manual, a field guide, or a materia medica, [it] is a multipurpose book accomplishing these functions in addition to covering scientific studies, ethnobotany, nutrition, and more. It highlights the plants of a biodiverse region not often written about.... With such a large number and variety of references employed, this is a versatile plant guide not to be missed." ― HerbalGram 104 (Nov. 2014―January 2015):72-73. Another Review of...

Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants of the Midwest

February 15th, 2014 Update:

A new review of our newest title, Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants of the Midwest, appears in the Winter 2013-14 issue of Medical Herbalism 17(1):13, by Paul Bergner, a longtime herbalist and the editor of the journal, who notes: "In... this updated edition of Matthew Alfs' 2001 [book], we find medicines often omitted in other contemporary texts.... For each plant, Alfs reviews ethnobotanical and folk uses, professional medical uses by the physician-herbalists of the past, scientific information that may be available, anecdotes from his own clinical experience, and information on gathering for food or medicine.... A recommended reference for the unique plants covered and for practical clinical comments."
